Buying Guide
A great wig purchase starts before you reach the checkout. These 10 questions give you the information you need to buy with confidence — and protect you from the disappointment that comes from purchasing without them.
Most wig disappointment is not random. It is the predictable result of buying without verifying the specific details that actually determine quality: what the hair is, what the lace is, how the cap is constructed, and whether the brand will stand behind the product if something goes wrong.
The questions below are not aggressive or unusual. They are the baseline due diligence that any serious wig buyer should complete before placing an order. A legitimate brand will answer every one of them clearly, promptly, and without evasion — because transparency is not a risk for a brand that has nothing to hide.
If a brand deflects, answers vaguely, or redirects you to the listing without addressing your question directly, that response itself is important information.
Question 1 — Is this 100% virgin human hair, or has it been chemically processed?
This is the single most important question you can ask. "Human hair" covers a spectrum from unprocessed virgin hair to blended synthetic-human mixes. Only 100% virgin human hair guarantees the product has never been dyed, permed, bleached, or chemically altered. It is the standard that delivers the longest lifespan and the most consistent appearance. If the answer is anything other than an explicit yes, ask for clarification on exactly what processing has been done. Read more in our truth about human hair wigs guide →
Question 2 — What is the hair's origin and how was it sourced?
Premium virgin human hair is sourced from single donors or carefully curated collections where the hair has never been chemically altered. Sellers who cannot or will not discuss sourcing are often working with lower-grade hair that has been processed, blended, or sourced without clear traceability. This does not require a full audit — simply asking the question tells you a lot about how seriously the brand takes quality.
Question 3 — Is the hair cuticle-aligned (Remy construction)?
Non-Remy hair — where strands run in mixed directions — tangles more frequently and noticeably, particularly after washing. All premium wigs should use cuticle-aligned (Remy) construction. If a seller cannot confirm this, the hair will likely perform below your expectations after the first wash or two.
Question 4 — What is the exact lace type, and what is the frontal size?
Ask for the specific lace grade: Swiss HD, transparent, or standard. Do not accept "HD lace" as a complete answer — ask whether it is genuinely Swiss HD or transparent lace marketed as HD. Also confirm the frontal size: 13×6 gives you maximum parting freedom; 13×4 is solid; anything smaller (5×5, 4×4) significantly limits your styling options. Our guide to HD Lace vs Transparent Lace → explains the practical differences in detail.
Question 5 — What is the exact density percentage?
Density should be stated as a specific number: 150%, 180%, 200%. "Natural density," "full density," or "high density" are not answers. 180% is the sweet spot for most buyers — full and voluminous while still looking realistic in everyday settings. Ask the seller to confirm the exact figure and, where possible, look for customer photos that show the density in natural daylight rather than studio lighting.
Question 6 — Is the cap glueless, and does it include an adjustable band?
A glueless cap with an adjustable elastic band means you can install the wig securely without adhesive — protecting your natural hair and edges while making the installation and removal process significantly easier. If glue is required for a comfortable fit, the cap is not genuinely glueless regardless of how it is marketed. Confirm this before purchasing, particularly if you are a beginner or wear your wig frequently.
Question 7 — What does your return policy cover, and what is the refund process?
A fair return policy should: allow at least 14 days from receipt for an unworn wig to be returned, refund the original purchase price (not store credit only), and state a clear timeline for processing (typically 5–10 business days). If the policy is "all sales final," there are no exceptions, or the window is under 7 days, proceed with extreme caution. A brand confident in its product does not need to prevent returns.
Question 8 — Do you have verified customer reviews with photos?
Verified reviews with genuine customer photos in natural light are the closest thing to a guarantee you have before purchasing. Look for reviews that include specific details: the exact shade ordered, how the lace laid in their skin tone, how the hair behaves after washing. Generic five-star reviews with no product specifics or photos provide very little assurance. See our guide on how to spot fake wig reviews →
Question 9 — How do you handle a situation where the wig arrives different from the listing?
This question tells you a great deal about a brand's confidence in their product and their commitment to customer experience. A legitimate brand will describe their dispute resolution process clearly: what documentation they need, what the resolution timeline looks like, and what outcomes are available to you. An evasive answer — or a response that immediately emphasises how unlikely this scenario is rather than how they would handle it — is a yellow flag worth noting.
Question 10 — What is your customer service response time, and how can I reach you?
Before committing to any significant purchase, send the brand a test inquiry and measure how long it takes to receive a specific, helpful response. Premium brands treat pre-sale inquiries as seriously as post-sale support. If a brand is slow, evasive, or unhelpful before you have spent your money, their support after is unlikely to improve.
At AA WIGS, every specification is disclosed on every product page because we believe you should have all the information you need before you decide — not after.
Is this 100% virgin human hair? This single question determines hair quality, longevity, heat-styling capability, and how the hair will look after repeated washing. Everything else builds from this foundation.
Ask the seller directly and note how specifically they answer. Check reviews for candid photos with product details. Reverse image search the product photos. Verify the brand has an identifiable social presence and a stated return policy with a cash refund option.
At least 14 days from receipt for an unworn wig, a cash refund (not store credit only), and a stated processing timeline. "All sales final" with no exceptions is a significant warning sign.
Absolutely. Candid customer photos in natural light are the most reliable indicator of what the wig actually looks like. Studio-only photography does not show how the wig behaves in real conditions — sunlight, different skin tones, natural movement.
A genuinely glueless wig includes an adjustable elastic band (and often internal combs) that creates a secure fit without any adhesive. No glue required means no residue, no scalp irritation, and no edge damage. This is the standard at AA WIGS for every unit.
