How To Maintain Your Luxury Body Wave Wig
A properly maintained AA WIGS body wave wig lasts 1–2 years. Here is exactly how to wash, dry, store, and protect your investment.
Before You Begin: What You Need
✦ Sulfate-free shampoo
Gentle formula for natural or colour-treated hair
✦ Moisturising conditioner
Apply from mid-lengths to ends only
✦ Microfibre towel
For gentle water absorption — no friction
✦ Wide-tooth comb
For detangling dry hair before washing
✦ Wig stand
For air drying and storage
✦ Heat protectant spray
Required before any heat styling
Step 1 — Detangle Before Washing
Before getting the wig wet, gently detangle the hair using a wide-tooth comb or your fingers. Always work from the ends upward to the roots — never drag from root to tip, which causes unnecessary breakage.
For body wave wigs, pay special attention to the mid-lengths where waves can interlock between wears. Take your time — rushing this step causes unnecessary damage.
Do not use a fine-tooth brush. A wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush with flexible bristles is the correct tool for human hair wigs.
Step 2 — Washing
- Fill a basin (not a running shower) with cool or lukewarm water. Hot water opens the hair cuticle and causes frizz and tangling in body wave hair.
- Add a small amount of sulfate-free shampoo to the water and mix gently.
- Submerge the wig and work the shampoo through the hair using a downward stroking motion — the same direction the hair naturally falls. Do not scrub, wring, or create friction.
- Focus on the cap and lace for any product buildup. The lace is delicate — use only your fingertips with very light pressure.
- Rinse thoroughly with cool water, again using a downward motion, until all shampoo is removed.
How often: Daily wear — every 7–10 days. Occasional wear — every 2–3 weeks. Over-washing depletes the hair's moisture and shortens its life.
Step 3 — Conditioning
- After rinsing out the shampoo, gently squeeze excess water from the hair.
- Apply a generous amount of moisturising conditioner from mid-lengths to ends. Do not apply conditioner to the roots or lace — it can loosen the knots over time.
- Leave the conditioner on for 5–10 minutes. For deeper moisture, cover with a shower cap and leave for up to 20 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly with cool water until completely removed.
Deep condition once a month: Use a protein-free deep conditioning treatment to restore moisture and keep the body wave pattern defined and bouncy.
Step 4 — Drying
- After washing, gently press the hair between a microfibre towel to absorb excess water. Do not rub or twist.
- Place the wig on a wig stand and allow it to air dry naturally. This is the gentlest and most effective method — it preserves the body wave pattern and prevents heat damage.
- If you need to speed up drying, use a blow dryer on the cool or low-heat setting with a diffuser attachment. Direct high heat will cause frizz and may weaken the hair over time.
- Never go to sleep with a wet or damp wig — the sustained moisture causes tangling and can distort the wave pattern.
Heat Styling
AA WIGS body wave wigs are 100% virgin human hair and are heat-safe up to 200°C (392°F). They can be flat-ironed, curled with a wand, or blow-dried — and the body wave pattern returns after washing.
Follow these rules every time you use heat:
- Always apply a heat protectant spray before any heat tool touches the hair. This is not optional.
- Keep heat away from the lace. The Swiss HD lace frontal is delicate — direct heat at the hairline can cause warping, discolouration, or damage. Style at least 1–2 inches from the lace line.
- Start at a lower temperature (around 300°F / 150°C) and increase only if needed. The hair responds well at moderate heat.
- Do not repeat passes — one slow, smooth pass is more effective and less damaging than multiple fast passes.
Storage
How you store your wig between wears significantly affects how long it lasts.
- Wig stand (daily storage): Keep your wig on a foam or canvas wig stand when not wearing it. This maintains the wave pattern, prevents tangling, and allows air circulation.
- Satin storage bag (travel / long-term): Use the AA WIGS satin bag included in your box. Place the wig gently inside with the hair folded loosely — not compressed or twisted.
- Original box (long-term storage): For extended storage periods, place the bagged wig back in the AA WIGS presentation box. The rigid structure prevents crushing.
- Keep away from: Direct sunlight (causes colour fading), excessive humidity (disrupts the wave pattern), and areas with heat vents or radiators.
Longevity Tips
Habit
Why It Matters
Sleep in a satin bonnet or on a satin pillowcase
Cotton causes friction that leads to frizz and breakage
Detangle before every wash and styling session
Prevents knots from tightening and causing shedding
Avoid heavy product buildup
Buildup clogs the cap and dulls the hair's natural shine
Moisturise regularly with a leave-in spray
Human hair needs hydration between washes
Handle the lace with care during installation
Swiss HD lace is delicate — rough handling causes tears
Trim the ends every 3–4 months
Removes split ends before they travel up the hair shaft
What To Avoid
- Sulfate or clarifying shampoos — strip moisture and cause frizz.
- Rubbing with a towel — causes tangling and disrupts the wave pattern.
- Sleeping with a wet wig — leads to matting and distorted waves.
- Excessive heat on the lace — damages the Swiss HD lace frontal irreparably.
- Storing in a plastic bag — traps moisture and causes mildew in human hair.
- Skipping heat protectant — every heat styling session without protection accelerates damage.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I wash my body wave wig?
Every 7–10 days for daily wear, or every 2–3 weeks for occasional wear. Washing too frequently strips moisture; too infrequently allows product buildup.
What shampoo should I use on a human hair wig?
Always use a sulfate-free shampoo. Sulfates are too harsh for wig hair and will cause dryness, frizz, and premature shedding.
Can I use heat on my AA WIGS body wave wig?
Yes — it is 100% virgin human hair, heat-safe to 200°C. Always use a heat protectant first and keep heat away from the lace frontal.
How long will my wig last?
With proper care, 1–2 years or longer. The biggest factors are how often you wash (gently), how you store it, and whether you protect it from heat.
