Swiss HD lace. Cuticle-aligned. Virgin hair. Glueless. Density. Closure. Frontal. The wig industry uses terms as though every buyer already knows them. This glossary explains every one — plainly, without jargon, so you can read any product listing and know exactly what you are buying.
The AA WIGS Signature Body Wave — Swiss HD lace, 180% density, 22 inches. Every term in this glossary applies directly to this piece.
A hair texture pattern characterized by loose, flowing S-shaped waves. Body wave sits between straight and curly — it has enough wave to add volume and movement, but loose enough that it falls naturally and photographs as elegantly relaxed rather than tightly coiled. It is one of the most versatile textures because it can be worn as-is, stretched straighter with a brush, or enhanced with a curling iron.
The internal structure of the wig — the base that everything is sewn onto. Common cap types include lace front (lace only at the hairline), full lace (lace across the entire cap), and machine-weft caps (wefts sewn onto a fabric base with no lace). Cap construction determines breathability, how the wig is installed, and how natural the hairline and parting look.
A small piece of lace — typically 4×4 or 5×5 inches — sewn at the top of a wig to close the leave-out area at the crown. A closure creates a natural-looking part or crown without requiring a full lace front. It is less versatile than a frontal (you cannot style the hair in any direction) but more affordable and easier to maintain.
The outermost layer of a single hair strand — a series of overlapping scales running from root to tip, like roof shingles. An intact cuticle keeps moisture inside the hair shaft, reflects light to produce shine, and protects the hair from damage. In wigs, cuticle alignment is one of the primary quality indicators: when all cuticles run in the same direction, hair slides past itself smoothly. When cuticles from different strands are misaligned, they interlock and tangle.
A descriptor meaning the cuticle layer of all hairs in the wig runs in the same direction — root to tip — without mixing strands from different sources that have opposing cuticle directions. Cuticle-aligned hair tangles less, holds moisture better, and maintains its quality longer than non-aligned hair. It is a prerequisite for virgin human hair but not guaranteed by the "human hair" label alone.
The amount of hair on the wig cap, expressed as a percentage of a full natural head of hair. 100% represents average natural thickness. 180% means the wig carries 80% more hair than a natural head — producing fullness and volume while still behaving naturally. A lace piece that runs across the full width of the hairline, from ear to ear (typically 13×4 or 13×6 inches). A frontal gives a completely natural-looking hairline across the entire front of the head and allows you to style the hair away from the face in any direction — middle part, side part, slicked back. Frontals require more skill and maintenance than closures but offer maximum styling versatility.
A wig designed to be installed and worn securely without adhesive — no glue, no tape, no bonding agent. Glueless wigs achieve their hold through elastic bands, adjustable straps, combs, clips, or a snug cap construction. The benefit is that the hairline and lace are not damaged by adhesive removal, and the wig can be removed and reinstalled without a preparation process. Not all wigs labeled "glueless" are truly secure without any product — quality cap construction is what makes glueless installation genuinely effective.
An ultra-thin, ultra-fine grade of lace that becomes nearly invisible against the skin when laid flat. Standard lace has a visible texture when examined closely. HD lace is so thin that it blends into the scalp without requiring heavy concealing products. It is more delicate than standard lace, which is why installation technique and overnight storage matter more with HD lace than with thicker grades.
Hair sourced from a human donor rather than synthetic fiber. Human hair wigs can be heat styled, colored, and washed the same way as growing hair. The "human hair" label, however, does not specify sourcing quality — it does not tell you whether the cuticle is intact, whether the hair came from one donor or many, or whether it has been chemically stripped and coated with silicone. Human hair is a category, not a quality standard.
The thin, sheer material at the front (or all over, in full lace wigs) of the wig cap where the hair is individually knotted. When laid against the scalp, lace simulates the appearance of a natural hairline by allowing the skin color to show through. Lace varies significantly in quality and thickness — from thick standard lace to ultra-fine Swiss HD lace.
A wig with a lace section only at the front hairline (typically 13×4 or 13×6 inches). The rest of the cap is constructed from a weft-sewn fabric base. Lace front wigs give a natural-looking hairline at the front while being more affordable and durable than full lace wigs. The trade-off is that parting is limited to the lace area and you cannot style the hair in all directions.
The lower back section of the wig, where the wig meets the back of the neck. The nape is the highest-friction area of any wig because it contacts collars, seat backs, pillows, and bag straps throughout daily wear. It is the area most prone to tangling and matting, and the one that requires the most attention in daily care.
The line along which the hair is divided on the wig. A lace front or full lace wig can be parted within the lace area. The width of lace (e.g., 13×4 vs. 13×6) determines how deep a part can be created. A 6-inch deep lace, for example, allows for a deeper, more natural-looking middle part than a 4-inch lace.
Hair where the cuticles have been kept in their natural direction — root to tip — rather than mixed. Remi is a step above standard collected hair in terms of tangle resistance and longevity. However, remi is not the same as virgin hair: remi hair may have been colored, permed, or processed as long as the cuticle direction was maintained during collection. Virgin hair is remi that has also not been chemically processed.
The release of individual hairs from the wig's weft tracks. Minimal shedding during the first few wears is manufacturing-normal — loose hairs working free from the tracks. A grade of lace that is finer and softer than standard lace, offering a more natural look at the hairline with less detectable texture against the skin. Swiss lace is more delicate than standard lace but less ultra-fine than HD lace. In "Swiss HD lace," the two terms refer to a specific combination: Swiss-grade material processed to HD-level thinness — the highest quality lace currently available in the market.
The wave or curl pattern of the hair on the wig. Common textures include straight, body wave, deep wave, water wave, kinky curly, and afro. Texture affects maintenance needs, versatility, and how the wig responds to humidity, heat, and washing. Body wave is the most versatile texture because it can be worn naturally, stretched into a looser wave, or styled with heat.
A lace color designed to blend with light to medium skin tones. Transparent lace appears almost colorless, which makes it less obvious against the skin than darker lace shades. It is not the same as HD lace — transparent refers to color, not material thickness. HD lace is transparent by nature due to its thinness, not because it has been manufactured in a light color.
Human hair that has never been chemically processed — no coloring, no perming, no bleaching, no relaxing. Virgin hair retains its original cuticle intact and in its natural direction (root to tip). It is the highest-quality category of human hair available because the cuticle's protective function is entirely preserved, which means it holds moisture, reflects light naturally, and lasts significantly longer than processed hair. A strip of hair — individual strands sewn together along a track — that is then sewn onto the wig cap. Wefts are the basic structural unit of most wig constructions. The quality of the weft stitching, and whether the weft edges are sealed after cutting, directly determines how much the wig sheds. A sealed weft has no loose ends from which hairs can escape. An unsealed weft sheds from the moment it is cut to size.
The base structure of the wig that sits on the head and holds everything in place. Wig caps come in different sizes (small, medium, large, petite) and different constructions (lace front, full lace, machine weft, monofilament). The fit of the wig cap against your head determines comfort, security, and how natural the wig sits — a cap that is too large shifts and looks obviously unnatural.
