How to Evaluate Human Hair

Seven tests any buyer can perform — on a wig they already own, or before they decide to buy. What the cuticle reveals, how silicone coating hides poor quality, what good density feels like, and how to read lace construction.

The wig industry uses consistent terminology — "100% human hair," "virgin," "Remy" — in ways that do not always match a consistent standard. These seven tests give you an objective method to evaluate what you actually have, beyond what the label says.

When to use these tests: Most are most useful on a wig you already own, after completing the First Ten Minutes inspection. The wet test and heat test in particular should only be done after confirming there are no quality concerns that would be affected by washing or heat.

Test 1 — The Cuticle Direction Test

Take a small section of hair between two fingers and run them upward against the direction of growth — from the tip toward the root. Then run downward, root to tip.

On cuticle-aligned hair, running against the direction will feel noticeably rougher than running with it. This roughness is the cuticle scales resisting your fingers. It confirms the hair is oriented in one direction, which is what "cuticle-aligned" or "Remy" means.

✓ Good hairClear directional difference — smooth going down, noticeably rougher going up
✗ Poor hairFeels the same in both directions — cuticle has been stripped or hair is mixed direction

Mixed-direction or stripped-cuticle hair is often treated with silicone to simulate the feel of healthy hair. See Test 2.

Test 2 — The Silicone Coating Test

Silicone Coating

Silicone coating is applied to low-quality or mixed-grade hair to make it feel soft and look shiny on first inspection. The coating wears off within a few washes, revealing the underlying quality. This is the most common reason a wig feels dramatically different after the first wash.

How to test: Wash a small section of the wig with a clarifying shampoo (sulfate-based, not sulfate-free). Evaluate the texture, softness, and manageability after washing and air-drying without any product.

✓ No coatingHair feels similar before and after wash — may need conditioning, but the texture is fundamentally unchanged
✗ CoatedHair feels significantly rougher, drier, or more tangled after washing — the coating has washed away

Test 3 — The Wet Test

Wet Behavior

Wet the hair and observe how it behaves. High-quality human hair should absorb water noticeably — it should feel heavier when wet. It should detangle relatively easily from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb while wet with conditioner.

✓ Good hairAbsorbs water, feels noticeably different wet vs dry, detangles with light work from ends upward
✗ Poor hairResists water (synthetic blends can repel water), mats immediately when wet, impossible to detangle without breakage

Test 4 — The Gentle Shed Test

Weft Construction

Hold a weft section and give it a firm but not forceful shake over a light-colored surface. Count the hairs that fall. On a well-constructed weft, very few should release — the weft stitching should hold hair securely.

✓ Good constructionMinimal shedding — fewer than 5–8 hairs on a firm shake
✗ Poor constructionMore than 10–15 hairs on a gentle shake, or visible fraying at the weft edge

Test 5 — The Density Feel Test

Density

Place the wig on a mannequin head or wig stand and allow the hair to fall naturally for at least 30 minutes — do not evaluate density immediately after removing from packaging. Compressed transit hair significantly underrepresents actual density.

Then assess: does the hair cover the cap completely when moved side to side? Are the weft tracks visible through the hair in normal light? Does it appear full from the front, side, and back?

✓ Correct densityCap is not visible through the hair in normal light, movement looks natural, volume appears consistent across all sections
✗ Understated densityWeft tracks visible in normal light, thin sections at the back or nape, hair lies completely flat with no body

Test 6 — The Lace Construction Test

Lace Quality

Hold the lace up to a light source and examine the knot pattern. Then look at how the hair is distributed across the lace — consistent spacing, natural hairline density that is thinner at the edge and fuller behind it.

✓ Good laceConsistent knot distribution, hairline density that mimics natural growth (thin at edge, fuller behind), lace material is fine and consistent, no holes or broken sections
✗ Poor laceInconsistent knot density, visible patches with no hair, lace material varies in thickness, very heavy knots that will not bleach naturally

Test 7 — The Heat Response Test

Heat Response

Apply heat at a low temperature (150°C / 300°F) to a small, inconspicuous section. Genuine human hair responds to heat progressively — it styles, holds the shape, and cools in the new form. Synthetic fiber reacts differently: it may melt, fuse, or not hold a curl at all.

✓ Human hairStyles smoothly at low heat, holds the shape after cooling, no unusual smell, no melting or fusing
✗ Synthetic or blendMelts or fuses at low heat, emits a plastic smell, refuses to hold a style, or becomes permanently kinked or stiff
