Product photographs and in-person appearance can differ for reasons that have nothing to do with quality. This page explains every variable — and the AA WIGS standards for keeping photographs as accurate as possible.
This is not unique to wigs — it applies to any product involving hair, textiles, or color. The photograph captures one specific moment, under specific light, on a specific screen. The wig you receive exists in natural light, on your head, through your eyes. These are genuinely different viewing conditions.
Understanding these variables helps you interpret product photos accurately — and know when a difference is normal variation versus a genuine discrepancy.
Most product photography uses controlled studio lighting — usually softboxes or ring lights at consistent angles. This lighting removes shadows, evens out tones, and often makes dark hair appear slightly richer or lighter than it looks in mixed household lighting. It is not manipulated — it is simply a controlled environment that does not match the variable light of everyday life.
Natural daylight is the most accurate reference for wig color — it reveals the true tonal range. Warm indoor bulbs make dark colors appear warmer. Cool-white bulbs make them appear slightly more ashy. The wig's color does not change; the light around it does.
Every screen — phone, laptop, tablet, monitor — has its own color temperature, brightness, and contrast settings. A wig that appears natural black on one screen may appear deep brown on another. Neither screen is showing you the definitive "true" color. Natural daylight remains the most reliable reference.
Product photos show the wig after professional preparation — washed, conditioned, and styled specifically for the shoot. The body wave may appear more defined, fuller, or shinier than the wig will look when it arrives after days inside shipping packaging. Both states are the same wig: one freshly styled, one freshly delivered.
The wig is held in a fixed position inside the packaging during transit. This compresses the wave pattern and reduces visible volume. Product photos are taken before packaging — what you see in the photograph is the wave in its restored state. The wave restores after airing or washing.
Wig length is photographed on a model or mannequin of a specific height and head circumference. A 22-inch wig will fall to a different point on someone 5'4" versus 5'9". The length of the wig does not change — the reference point does. Length is measured from the crown of the cap to the ends of the hair, not from where it falls on the body.
Density looks different in photographs versus in person, and different again when the wig is worn versus displayed on a stand. How the hair falls, the angle of the camera, and the background all affect how dense the wig appears in an image. At 180% density, the wig is designed to appear full — but a flat overhead shot and a styled wear photo will show this differently.
Human hair is not mechanically produced to a single specification. Even hair sourced to the same color and texture standard will have slight variations in tone and wave pattern between strands and between units. This is the nature of natural fiber — not a deviation from quality.
The product photographs show Swiss HD lace against the model's specific skin tone. The lace will interact differently with lighter or deeper skin tones — appearing more or less visible. This is why lace shade and knot treatment are part of the installation process, not fixed outcomes at the manufacturing stage.
